Introduction: Chronic infection with hepatitis C virus predisposes to cirrhosis in 20% of cases and hepatocellular carcinoma between 1 and 4%. About 3% of the world's population is infected. Direct contact with blood, followed by sexual and perinatal transmission are the main routes of contamination Prevalent in men and in the fifth decade of life. Global distribution of genotype 1 and 2 predominantly genotype 1. Objective: To observe the behavior of infection with hepatitis C virus, gastroenterology consultation in a general hospital. Materials and methods: A descriptive study were included patients with positive HCV antibodies, January 2007 to December 2011, were asked to PCR. 179 cases were evaluated. Conclusions: Virus Hepatitis C is a global public health problem, increasing in Latin America, is diagnosed by the evaluation more blood banks since its discovery in 1989 by Mickail Houghton and collaborators.
