Objective: to determine the prevalence of lymphocytic duodenitis in patients with indications for Upper Endoscopy. Patients and Methods : Descriptive cross - sectional study. Upper endoscopy was performed in 50 patients with symptoms of pep tic ulcer disease with or without PPI treatment. We investigated about the history of Helicobacter pylori , immunological diseases, use of NSAIDs, PPIs and predominant symptoms. We evaluated the architecture of the intestinal villi and the number of intraep ithelial lymphocytes in the duodenal biopsy. Results : The prevalence of lymphocytic duodenitis was 7 (14%). The mean age was 47 years, 71.4% were female. 100% presented gastropathy and non - specific duodenopathy. The most frequent symptoms were epigastralgi a 57.1%, heartburn 28.6% and postprandial fullness 28.6%. Of the patients, 71.4% had peptic ulcer disease, 28.6% immunological disease, 28.6% Helicobacter pylori infection, 42.9% had NSAID use, and 85.7% had PPI use. Conclusions : Lymphocytic duodenitis was more common in females, and patients younger than 50 years, the majority presented symptoms and had an association with immunological diseases, use of NSAIDs and PPIs, Helicobacter pylori infection and ulceropeptic disease. This entity should be taken int o account when studying duodenal biopsies with increased intraepithelial lymphocytes and normal villi.
