Abstract

JIMENEZ, María Isabel et al. Study of a cohort of celiac children for 22 years. Gen [online]. 2017, vol.71, n.3, pp.098-103. ISSN 2477-975X.

Introduction and objective: Coeliac disease is very prevalent and appears in a lifetime of physical and emotional development. We carried out a follow-up protocol since 1995 and a review-analysis of the data collected since then. Method: We reviewed the histories of 62 celiac children, epidemiological variables, diagnosis and evolution. A questionnaire about gluten-free diet was conducted on patients and their parents. The data were correlated with each other and with the results of the literature. Results: There is a short stature in 21.42% and obesity in a 5.3%. The occurrence of associated diseases is not related to the variables studied. 82% of adolescents report voluntary transgressions. All families are concerned about reading labeling and complying with the diet, but recognize that compliance is difficult when go out. Conclusion: It is important to follow these patients to control the ponderosa estatural and pubertal development, to detect early associated diseases and loss of adherence to the diet. No relationship was found between poor diet compliance and the onset of associated diseases. Taking a gluten-free diet is a challenge because of multiple factors.
