Resumen

RIVERO, Zulbey et al. INTESTINAL PARASITES IN CHILDREN UNDER 5 YEARS OLD WITH DIARRHEA. Gen [online]. 2017, vol.71, n.4, pp.132-136. ISSN 2477-975X.

Objective: To evaluate the frequency of enteroparasites in children under 5 years of age with diarrhea who attend a Zulia state care center. Materials and Methods: 100 stool specimens were collected: 75 of children with diarrhea (sample) and 25 without diarrhea (control), which were subjected to fresh microscopic examination and lugol, concentrated with Formaldehyde-Ether and Kinyoun staining. Social stratification was performed according to Graffar-Méndez. Results: 38 (51%) children in the sample group and 10 (40%) in the control group presented enteroparasites, where monoparasitism predominated for both groups. Children aged 2 to 5 years were the most parasitized in the two groups studied. In simple group, they emphasized Ascaris lumbricoides (20%) and Blastocystis spp. (18.6%); while in the control group were Trichuris trichiura (28.6%) and Giardia lamblia (21.5%). Intestinal coccidiosis was not detected. No statistically significant difference was detected in the prevalence of enteroparasites among children with and without diarrhea. 53 children belonged to the stratum of relative poverty and 47 to critical poverty, a significant relationship was found between the presence of parasites and critical poverty. Conclusion: The high prevalence of intestinal parasites in both groups is probably due to precarious environmental sanitation conditions in the studied population.
