Abstract
CASTRO, Denny; BECERRA, Vanessa and SILVA, Olga. Endoscopic Treatment of Zenker’s Diverticulum. Gen [online]. 2025, vol.79, n.2, pp.81-84. Epub May 12, 2025. ISSN 0016-3503. https://doi.org/10.61155/gen.v79i2.739.
Flexible endoscopic septotomy involves the division of the septum containing the cricopharyngeal muscle between Zenker’s diverticulum and the esophagus, from the mucosa to the diverticular base. This study presents our institution’s experience with this endoscopic technique.
Patients and Methods:
A retrospective analysis was conducted from January 2009 to October 2024 on patients with Zenker’s diverticulum. The procedure was performed using an Olympus flexible videoendoscope, a needle sphincterotome, and a homemade diverticulotome.
Results:
A total of 32 patients, with a mean age of 76 years, were treated. Of these, six patients required 3-4 septotomy sessions for complete symptom resolution, and one patient required surgical treatment.
Conclusions:
Flexible endoscopic septotomy is a safe and effective method for the treatment of Zenker’s diverticulum
