Abstract
LUZARDO-ZSCHAECK, Lesbia I and ZSCHAECK, Dietrich W.. Nutrition and Health Science. Microbiome. Fiber. Metabolic Diseases. Anti-inflammatory and Anti-cancer. Gen [online]. 2025, vol.79, n.4, pp.232-237. Epub Oct 15, 2025. ISSN 0016-3503. https://doi.org/10.61155/gen.v79i4.783.
Most non-infectious diseases are associated with poor nutrition and are chronic, inflammatory and degenerative. Metabolic syndrome and metabolic dysfunction are identified as the central processes of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), resulting from alterations in eight essential cellular processes: glycosylation, insulin resistance, oxidative stress, inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, membrane integrity, environmental factors, and autophagy. The root of disease and health lies in the gut. A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients, fiber, phytochemicals, and omega-3 fats are necessary for the promotion of an optimal gut health, which depends largely on the human microbiome made up of bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses, and archaea residing in the skin, gut, and other parts of the body.
