SUMMARY Objective: To demonstrate that vaginal delivery in breech presentation can be carried out with same security that in the vertex cephalic presentations. Method: Prospective study of 121 pregnant patients with fetuses in breech presentation, from January 1990 to January 1992. Of 121 patients, 95 were adequate for the study. Multiple pregnancies and dead fetuses were excluded. Socioeconomic level, age, and type or breech presentation were not discriminated Setting: Service 2B of the Obstetric Department of the University Hospital of Maracaibo, Maternity "Dr. Armando Castillo Plaza". Maracaibo, Estado Zulia, Venezuela. Results: From the 95 patients, in 82.10% (n = 78) the childbirth was carried out for vaginal route. The age average was of 28 years. Of the total of childbirths vaginal 88.46% were term, and 11.54% preterm pregnancies. Were multiparous 78.20%, and primiparous 21.80%. The relationship among the estimated fetal weight and the weight obtained in the recently newborn according to the rule of Johnson, revealed 94.44% of successes. The fetal heart rate intrapartum remained within the normal limits in 98.44%. The duration of the childbirth work was less than 10 hours in 64.10%. The Apgar at one minute of birth was between 6 and 8 points in 96.16% of the cases. There was obstetric trauma in 3.8%. Conclusion: In 78 cases of 95 (82.10%) delivery was vaginal, what demonstrates its feasibility in breech presentation. The risks for maternal and neonatal morbimortality were minimum.
