SUMMARY Objective: To expose the surface of placental separation and their deeper region which exhibit irregular microcavities described in relationship with the mechanism of cleavage. Method: Five normal placentas were selected and five specimens of each one were processed to H-E stain and scanning electron microscopy. Setting: Laboratory de Microscopia Electronica de Barrido. CIADANA. Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud. Universidad de Carabobo. Nucleo Aragua, Maracay. Results: 90 percent of slides observed revealed microcavities built in the basal plate which seem fuse to form channels that get thin their structure. They were found in the place where cells die. Conclusion: Irregular microcavities located in the basal plate after cellular death seem to weaken the area of feto maternal junction in the mechanism of placental separation
