SUMMARY Objective: To evaluate the type ofcervical lesion in patients carrying the infection by human papilloma virususing cytology and histological examination. Method: Prospective, descriptive andlongitudinal study of 39 patients with cervical intraepitelial lesionsassociated to human papilloma virus. Setting: Outpatient clinics ofGynecology and Prenatal Care of The "Hospital Central de Maracay"and the Uterus Cervical Pathology Unit of the "Maria Teresa Toro"Ambulatory. Results: The mean age was 32.86years. Human papilloma virus wasdetected by cytology and directed biopsy in 20 cases (51.3%). Eighteen patients (46.2%) were carriersof human papilloma virus different from the classified as epidemiologicalrisk. In 12 cases (30.7%) weredetected high risk squamous intraepitelial lesions followed by 11 cases of lowrisk squamous intraepitelial lesions and 1 case had epidermoid carcinoma. Twenty six patients (53.1%) with lesionfor human papilloma virus at the directed biopsy and from the 7 patients withserotypes of high risk human papilloma virus, 3 (42.9%) presented lesion forhuman papilloma virus at the directed biopsy. Conclusion: The analysis of the results showed thecharacteristics and the type of human papilloma virus infections. Likewise, the results showed that thepolymerase chain reaction allows the identification of the risk and precursorsof the invader carcinoma. Key words: Cervical intraepitheliallesion.
