Objective: To study the premature childbirth, related factors, to establish causes and to make suggestions for a more effective obstetric attention. Setting: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, "Dr. Adolfo Prince Lara" Hospital , Puerto Cabello, State Carabobo, Venezuela. Method: Analytic, epidemiological, retrospective and descriptive study of 281 premature childbirths occurred during the period of 1995-1999. Results: The patients proceeded 49.11% of suburban and 35.59 % from rural area; 77.4% from Carabobo State, 84.64% single; 30.61% 19 year-old or less, and 73.72% had no prenatal care. In family history prevail arterial hypertension (25.4%) and diabetes (15.56%); in personal history prematurity (11.4%); and in the current pathology the premature rupture of membrane (30.6%), urinary infection (28.11%), hypertensive pathologies (8.54%). 49.11% was high gravity, with 32.3% age gestational among 31 and 33 weeks, and spontaneous delivery 76.51%, they were male 55.67%, and of weight between 2000 and 2 499 g 38.14% and you high 40-44 cm 30.93%; Apgar score 6 or less 54.95%. The global morbidity was 21.3%, and the global perinatal mortality 29.89%, in both it was decisive the respiratory distress.
