Objective: To determine the ABO group and Rh type and to screen for anti-D antibodies in female newborns among Rh positive mothers. Methods: A cord blood sample was obtained routinely at birth from all female babies to determine their ABO / Rh and anti-D antibodies. Standard dose of Rh immune globulin (Rho-GAM®) was administered to all Rh negative non-sensitized babies within 72 hours of delivery. Setting: Hospital Privado Centro Medico de Caracas. Results: Nineteen out of 145 newborns (13.10 %) were non-sensitized Rh negatives. Conclusion: The systematic sampling of female newborns from Rh positive mothers allows the detection of those female babies who are Rh negative and their anti-D status. This approach and the administration of Rh immune globulin to these babies, requires further evaluation to establish its effects in avoidance of the grandmothers syndrome.
