Resumen

MEDINA GONZALEZ, Luis; SALAZAR-CABRAL, Scarlet  y  RIVERO, Arnoldo. Efecto de la fórmula con almidón de maíz pregelatinizado en el tratamiento de las regurgitaciones en lactantes. Rev Obstet Ginecol Venez [online]. 2002, vol.62, n.1, pp.27-31. ISSN 0048-7732.

Objective: To determine the efficacy of a formula with a pregelatinized cornstarch as a thickening agent. Method: A longitudinal, prospective, randomized and comparative study, case-control type, of 60 infants with non-complicated regurgitation. Setting: Outpatient clinic, Pediatric Department at "Concepción Palacios" Maternity Hospital. Results: Both, case and control groups were anthropometrical, and clinically comparable. The improvement of regurgitation was noticed since the first week of treatment and there was a correlation between the improvement and the treatment time. The hiccup was the main symptom associated to regurgitation, also colic, both improved with the treatment. The increase in weight and height was similar in both groups. The formula’s tolerance was excellent. Only one of the cases developed constipation as a side effect. Conclusion: We have demonstrated that the regular use of a thickened formula with pregelatinized corn starch is useful in the treatment of mild and moderates regurgitation in infants fed with artificial formula.
