SUMMARY Objective: To determine the characteristics of perinatal transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus in the zuliana region and to establish the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy. Method: Prospective, descriptive, simple and stratified study of pregnant women with the virus of the human immunodeficiency positive diagnosed before or during pregnancy, between July 1st of 1996 until December 31 of 2000. Setting: Obstetric Department at the University Hospital of Maracaibo, Maternity "Dr. Armando Castillo Plaza". Maracaibo. Estado Zulia. Results: Forty patients were studied, with an incidence of 0.102%; 36 reached term of gestation, 3 ended in abortions and one in ectopic pregnancy. Mean maternal age was 25 years; 27 were multigravida, with virus in 24 or more months in 25 cases; 30 received zidovudine, beginning at 31 to 40 weeks of gestation. Cesarean section was performed in 27 cases. The main associate pathology was candidiasis. No adverse effects were observed with zidovudine in the mothers, and no congenital malformations in the newborns. All newborn treated with zidovudine remain negatives. Conclusions: Necessity to use zidovudina like therapy antiretroviral and cesarean operation as effective combination to avoid the vertical transmission. The health personnel should know and apply biosafety norms for all type of patient.
