SUMMARY Objective: To evaluate the integrity of basement membrane and their features in case of complete hydatidiform mole as a part of the extracellular matrix located under the trophoblast. Method: Slides were prepared with reactive periodic acid stain to assess complex polysaccharides and silver nitrate stain for proteins. Positive slides were selected for observation with scanning electron microscopy. Setting: Laboratorio de Microscopia Electronica de Barrido. Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud. Universidad de Carabobo. Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud, Maracay. Results: The basal membrane showed thickening, separation of the syncytial plasma membrane, discontinuity, thinnest and divisions. Zones of minimum or increased hyperplasia lack of basal membrane which alters in zones of intense edema. Conclusion: Degenerative changes in the basal membrane might be indicative of the interaction of trophoblast cells in the extracellular matrix as a prognostic of possible malign transformation of the effect produced by permanent transport of fluid.
