SUMMARY Objective: To study the socioeconomic conditions, alimentary habits and nutritional composition of the diet of the pregnant women, for orientation and appropriate care. Method: Descriptive, epidemiological, analytical, cross section study, based on a interview-survey of 400 patients in delivery room during 2002. Six social layers were studied, and nutritional frequency and composition of nutrients were obtained. Setting: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, "Dr. Adolfo Prince Lara" Hospital, Puerto Cabello, Estado Carabobo. Results: In epidemiological factors, origin of the Carabobo State predominated (85 %), with residence in suburb (52.25 %). The civil state concubine (46.5 %). The smaller age was 34 years (69.5 %). In social stratification predominated the profession of the head of family in no specialized worker (52.25 %). The majority social layer was the IV, working class (68.25 %) and the V, marginal class (19.75 %). The frequency of nutritional ingestion revealed that 285 women (71.25 %) eat three times a day, and the rest twice a the day or less. The composition of food showed that 46.75 % drink milk twice a week or not at all. The more common food were: pasta 51.5 %, beans 41 % 5 days or more per week. Conclusion: The pregnant women that assist to our hospital belong to precarious socioeconomic layers, nutritional frequency loss, a deficient protein composition, with tendency to carbohydrates. Plans are needed support to elevate their standard of life and nutritional orientation.
