SAULNY DE JORGES, Jacqueline; MORANTE, Ana y MEDINA, Luis. Evaluación renal por ultrasonido en niños con sospecha de patología . Rev Obstet Ginecol Venez [online]. 2003, vol.63, n.2, pp.75-80. ISSN 0048-7732.
Objective: To know the frequency and kind of renal pathology in children sent with suspicion of renal pathology to the outpatient clinic of ultrasound. Method: Revision of renal ecosonograms of 524 children sent with suspicion of renal pathology between the years 1989 to 1996. Setting: Pediatric Ultrasound Unit at the Maternidad "Concepcion Palacios". Results: From the children evaluated 241 (46 %) had normal ultrasound and 283 (54 %) presented some pathology. The most frequent was uni and bilateral hydronephrosis in different degrees of severity in 127 children (24.23 %), follow by renal hypoplasia in 47 cases (9 %) and renal dysplasia in 33 cases (6.29 %). Conclusions: Renal ultrasound performed in the neonatal period and in children younger than 2 years old is important for the follow-up of pathology diagnosed during gestation as well as screening of renal problems that can be irreversible in the long term.
