Objective: To investigate the presence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and other affections of sexual transmission in convicts of the central region of Venezuela. Method: Analytic, prospective, study in 265 interns to which Papanicolaou, test of Schiller and cervical biopsy was performed when needed; as well as, investigation of sexual transmitted diseases. Sexual habits were also assessed. Setting: Jails of Tocoron, Tocuyito and the National Institute of Feminine Orientation. Results: The mean age of the first sexual relationship was 16,75 year. A slight tendency was observed to the sexual promiscuity with 33.96 %. The sexual pattern of the interns was highly heterosexual (89 %). The presence of syphilis was very high (117/1 000 inhabitants) when comparing it with the national morbidly of 3.51/1 000 inhabitants; equally, the morbidly for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, was in 377/1 000 which was high compared with the national of 2.5/1 000. Conclusions: This is the first national prospective study that evaluate the presence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and other sexual transmitted diseases in convicts of the central region of country. Besides the slight indexes of promiscuity, a high morbidly was also evident in syphilis and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. The Ministry of the Interior and Justice through their dependences of health should watch over and to correct this problem
