Resumen

BREA-ANDRADE, Adolfo; PRIETO-FRANCHI, Mary  y  VILLALOBOS, Noren. Utilidad del signo de Finnerty en el diagnóstico oftalmoscópico de los síndromes hipertensivos del embarazo. Rev Obstet Ginecol Venez [online]. 2003, vol.63, n.3, pp.121-127. ISSN 0048-7732.

Purpose: To determine the usefulness of the Finnerty’s sign in the ophthalmoscopic diagnosis of hypertensive disorders during pregnancy. Methods: We studied 15 patients admitted to the Obstetrical Emergency Service of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Division at the University Hospital in Maracaibo, Venezuela, with the diagnosis of hypertensive disorder during pregnancy (preeclampsia), observing the blood pressure values at admission, and performing direct ophthalmoscopy with pupillary dilation. We scored the presence of Finnerty´s sign in a severity scale of 1 - 4 points, and the presence of retinal vascular narrowing in a scale of 0 - 4 points. Setting: Obstetrical Emergency Service of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Division at the University Hospital in Maracaibo, Venezuela. Results: Of the 15 patients studied, 100 % showed Finnerty´s sign and 93.33% (14 patients) demonstrated retinal vascular narrowing. We determined a high statistical relationship between the presence of Finnerty´s sign and vascular narrowing, with the values of systolic and diastolic blood pressure (p= 0.001). Conclusions: The presence of the Finnerty´s sign is a useful diagnostic tool in the ophthalmoscopic evaluation of the patients with hypertensive disorders during pregnancy.
