Resumen

ZIGHELBOIM, Itic. Utilidad de la histeroscopia en el fracaso de extracción de dispositivos intrauterinos. Rev Obstet Ginecol Venez [online]. 2004, vol.64, n.2, pp.89-99. ISSN 0048-7732.

Objective: To establish the value of hysteroscopy for the diagnosis and removal of intrauterino devises in patients with non-visible threads and previous failure of intrauterino devises removal. Methods: One hundred six office hysteroscopies were performed in order to locate and attempt removal of intrauterino devises with non-visible strings. All patients had undergone previous failed attempts of removal by diverse methods. Setting: Servicio de Fertilidad, "Maternidad Concepción Palacios", Caracas. Results: Removal of the intrauterino devises was carried out successfully in 97.77 % of women. Hysteroscopy was found to be superior than previously attempted methods in localizing the intrauterino devises and diagnosing incomplete uterine perforations. The removal was accomplished in 85.71 % these cases. Conclusions: Hysteroscopy is a reliable procedure for diagnosis and removal of intrauterino devises. It can be performed as an outpatient procedure without anesthesia or sedation. The removal can be accomplished using conventional instruments. Teaching institutions should take advantage of this tool to manage these patients, train medical personal and avoid blind procedures and their potential complications.

Palabras clave : Removal intrauterine devises with missing tails; Hysteroscopic usefulness.
