Objective: To know maternal mortality, its incidence, characteristics, obstetrical conditions neonative and to show related factors. Method: Descriptive study retrospective analytical epidemiologist of 282 maternal histories, with 283 neonatal deaths, happened during quinquennium 1998-2002. Perinatal mortality for the lapse was 41.66 by thousands new born and 21.10 for neonatal mortality. Setting: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Hospital "Dr Adolfo Prince Lara", Puerto, Carabobo State. Results: The determining age was of 24 years and less (52,84%); in familiar antecedents it predominated the arterial hypertension (52.5%) and diabetes (31,87%), in personal antecedents the arterial hypertension (50.88%); in the entrance diagnosis the threat premature childbirth (38.49 %) and membrane premature rupture (21,03%). There was no prenatal control in 70,34%; they were you multigravidity 59.22%, with age of smaller pregnancy of 37 weeks 74.64%, and finished in normal childbirth 65.25%. The majority were masculine (55.83%), with smaller weight of 2500 g (73.5%), height less minor of 50 cm (86.92%) and Apgar index of 7 and less (84,09). The direct factor of death prevaleciente well-known in 283 cases was the respiratory insufficiency (61.13%) and sepsis (21.91%). Conclusion: We concluded that neonatal perinatal mortality is discharge, sustained by the prematurity, everything indicates to improve the handling of the etiologies reasons and neonatal attention, cradles in a preventive program.
