Objective: To evaluate oxidative damage in postmenopausal women who received hormonal replacement therapy with estradiol and norestisterone acetate Methods: Fifty postmenopausal patients were attended. Postmenopausal patients were treated with 2 mg of estradiol and 1 mg of norestisterone acetate day orally for 6 months. Serum concentrations of erythrocyte glutation, nitrotyrosine, nitric oxide, total cholesterol, low-density, very low-density high density lipoproteins and triglycerides were measured Settings: Hospital Central ADr, Urquinaona2, Maracaibo. Results: After 6 months, a statically significant rise of nitric oxide and erythrocyte glutation (p < 0,05) was observed. Differences was not statically significant when nitrotyrosine levels were measured baseline and after 6 months (p < 0,05). An increase in triglycerides and a decrease in low-density lipoproteins were found (p < 0,05). A reduction of total cholesterol and a rise in high-density and very low density lipoproteins levels were also statically significant (p < 0,05). Conclusions: Antioxidant and preventive properties against oxidative damage of estrogen and progestins could be responsible of beneficial cardiovascular effects through diminishing oxidative damage and serum lipids levels.
