Objective: To apply the scanning electron microscopy stain to the intervillous surface of the basal plate of the human placenta at 38 weeks of pregnancy, obtained by cesarean, in a pacient of 24 years old, apparently normal. Method: Specimens from basal plate were obtained immediately after labor, washed in phosphate buffer at pH 7.3 and fixed by immersion in 2% glutaraldehyde at the same buffer to be processed with the conventional stains of scanning electron microscopy. Sitting: Laboratory of electron microscopy, CIADANA, Faculty of Health Sciences, Maracay, Aragua. Results: A smooth surface in some regions and with numerous folds of the syncytium was observed. In another regions, erythrocytes, cells of basal plate, and the morphological three-dimensional aspect of the interaction of anchoring villi with the syncytium were noted. Conclusion: This new three-dimensional vision exhibits the throphoblastic intervillous surface and their interaction with anchoring villi which is of interest for the understanding of placental detachment.
