Objective: To determine the knowledge about emergency contraception in new clients of a service of family planning. Setting: Service of family planning of the Hospital "Materno Infantil del Este." Dr. Joel Valencia Parparcen. Caracas. Methods: A cohort prospective study, in which we interviewed 232 clients that went for the first time to the service of family planning, in search of data about the knowledge about emergency contraception. Results: 48.28 % of interviewed clients has information about the emergency contraception but this it was only given by a doctor in 15.52 %. 93.53 % doesnt know how to use it correctly and 63.36 % thinks that it acts by provocation of abortion. Finally, 12.07 % only perceives the emergency contraception as a secure contraception alternative and 13.36 % as an effective alternative. Conclusions: An important lack of knowledge exists about the emergency contraception and a negative perception of its effectiveness and security.
