Objective: To explore the level of awareness of and the attitude towards the subject within that portion of the population willing to accept vaccination and to design an adequate instrument in order to obtain applicable informed consent. Methods: The research is based on a survey of 469 subjects with the purpose of exploring the current level of awareness of HPV. The population was composed of 77 % women and 23 % men with a distribution of between 10 and 59 years of age. More than 55 % were between 20 and 39 years of age. More than 55 % of the subjects had middle or technical level of education. Results: More than 80 % of the persons had little or no knowledge on the subject, nevertheless close to 70.% of persons recognized the relationship between VPH and cervical cancer. More than 77 % are aware that cervical cancer can be prevented and 55 % recognize that curable lesions exist previous to the presentation of cancer. About 77 % are aware that a periodic gynaecologic examination can detect viral lesions that cause cancer. More than 55 % ignore the existence of a preventive vaccine. Also 72 % ignore that girls aged 9 and older can be vaccinated. While more than 80 % are in favour of vaccination 86 % would give their consent to be vaccinated and 75 % would consent to vaccinate their daughter. More than 73 % think that vaccination should be mandatory. Conclusions: With this information a format of informed decision is being developed for presentation, consideration and possible approval.
