Dysmenorrhea is a common menstrual condition in women of reproductive age, characterized by pelvic pain during the menstrual cycle. This article reviews the risk factors, clinic and diagnosis of primary dysmenorrhea to propose a multimodal treatment approach for this condition. Primary dysmenorrhea is pelvic pain associated with the menstrual period without underlying pelvic pathology. In contrast, secondary dysmenorrhea refers to pelvic pain that presents as a symptom of other gynecologic conditions. Diagnosis is based on detailed clinical history, physical and gynecological examination, and complementary tests may be performed in specific cases. Treatment of primary dysmenorrhea is multimodal and aims to relieve pain and improve the patient's quality of life. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are the first line of treatment, although other therapeutic approaches can be employed.
