REYES MONASTERIO, Antonio et al. Cytological Diagnosis in Women of Falcon: Results of the Program “And God Made Me a Woman”. Rev Obstet Ginecol Venez [online]. 2024, vol.84, n.4, pp.379-385. Epub 05-Maio-2025. ISSN 0048-7732. https://doi.org/10.51288/00840406.
Objective:
To evaluate the prevalence of different cervical pathologies in women from Falcón State, Venezuela, through a mass screening program. Additionally, we aim to identify the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics associated with different cervical pathologies to contribute to the design of more effective prevention and control strategies.
Methods:
An observational study with a cross-sectional descriptive design was conducted. Cervical pathology detection activities were carried out in all municipalities. All collected samples were sent to the Institute of Scientific Health Research (IFICS) in Coro, Falcon, where they were processed and carefully evaluated.
Results:
894 women were evaluated. Most of the women were in the 40-49 age group, followed by the 20-29 age group. The findings associated with infectious agents were: Candida, which affected 9.28%, mixed infection (8.84%), Gardenella (1.34%) and Trichomonas (0.78%). Changes associated with inflammation were the most common finding, affecting 21.36%.
Conclusion:
It would be beneficial to investigate the underlying reasons for the high rates of infections and inflammatory changes in this population, and to design specific interventions to address them. It is also crucial to promote and improve access to regular testing and reproductive health education, especially in areas with limited resources.
