Abstract
FERNANDEZ-HERNANDEZ, Loruama and ROMERO-MENDEZ, Mhadelyne. Platelet-rich plasma in second intention healing of complicated surgical wounds in post cesarean section and gynecological surgery patients. Rev Obstet Ginecol Venez [online]. 2024, vol.84, n.4, pp.428-440. Epub May 05, 2025. ISSN 0048-7732. https://doi.org/10.51288/00840412.
Objective:
To determine the effect of platelet-rich plasma on secondary intention healing of surgical wounds in patients post cesarean section and gynecological surgery.
Method:
This was a descriptive, prospective, experimental, and interventional investigation. Thirty patients with surgical wound complications were selected. The results were expressed in absolute figures, percentages, and contingency tables for comparison.
Results:
The most frequent age group (40%) was 16 to 25 years old; 80% presented infection of the surgical wound upon consultation, and the majority had a normal body mass index. At the beginning of the application of platelet-rich plasma, 43.4 % had no exudate in the wound. The color of the wound was 80% pink on day 7. The granulation tissue after the application of platelet-rich plasma was abundant on day 14 at 83.3%. In 60% of patients, the wound length was 6 - 10cm in the first 7-14 days and was reduced to 0.1 - 2 cm after 14 days in 90 %. Complete wound closure took 24.5 ± 9.33 days on average.
Conclusion:
the administration of platelet-rich plasma is effective and can be used as an alternative treatment to accelerate healing in patients who require closure of wounds by secondary intention.
