The microbiota plays a fundamental role in the homeostasis of the human body. It is believed that, during pregnancy, the stability of these biological niches prevents the development of morbid processes associated with pregnancy. These have an impact on fertility. A review of the literature is carried out to know the current aspects related to the microbiota and pregnancy, and the adverse outcomes that could occur from dysbiosis. The terms used for the indexed search on the web were the following: microbiota and pregnancy, genital microbiota, vaginal microbiota, endometrial microbiota, microbiota and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, microbiota and threat of preterm delivery, microbiota and premature rupture of membranes, placental microbiota, microbiota and obesity. The sample consisted of 26 review articles and 2 basic clinical trials, related to the first studies of the female genital microbiota from 2010 to 2024.
