Abstract
BRITO OJEDA, Marianny; COLMENARES DIAZ, Junior and SUE CISNEROS, Giannina. Postpartum hemorrhage: association with the use of magnesium sulfatey. Rev Obstet Ginecol Venez [online]. 2025, vol.85, n.2, pp.163-171. Epub Oct 23, 2025. ISSN 0048-7732. https://doi.org/10.51288/00850207.
Objective:
To evaluate the association between the use of magnesium sulfate in the delivery room and the frequency and severity of postpartum hemorrhage in patients who were admitted to the Delivery Room Service of the Concepción Palacios Maternity Hospital between January and July 2023.
Methods:
Retrospective, cohort study, which included 232 patients, in 2 cohorts according to the use of magnesium sulfate as a risk factor for postpartum hemorrhage: 132 received it and 100 did not. The relationship between postpartum hemorrhage and the use of magnesium sulphate was established.
Results:
Among the 132 women who received magnesium sulfate, 10 had postpartum hemorrhage (7.6%), and among the 100 who did not receive it, there were 4 postpartum hemorrhage (4.0%). Among patients with postpartum hemorrhage in the first group, the mean blood loss was 1570 ± 371 ml (23.6%), and in the second group it was 1250 ± 289 ml (23.1%) (p = 0.277). Seven patients in the first group (70%) and none in the second group required blood transfusion (p = 0.025). All received 6 grams of magnesium sulfate as impregnation; Most patients received between 12 and 24 grams as maintenance. There was no association between the dose of magnesium sulfate received (p = 0.584) and the development of postpartum hemorrhage.
Conclusion:
The use of magnesium sulfate was not related to a higher incidence of postpartum hemorrhage, but it was related to the need for blood products.
