Abstract

Objective:

To evaluate the effect of parenteral solutions administered during labor on neonatal glycemia. Justification: To reduce the incidence of neurological sequelae associated with neonatal hypoglycemia.

Methods:

A prospective, exploratory, descriptive, comparative, analytical, cross-sectional, and predictive study was conducted in a sample of 60 pregnant women. Two groups were formed: Group A (n = 30): received 5 % dextrose solution. Group B (n = 30): received 0.9 % physiological solution. Neonatal glycemia was measured immediately after birth.

Results:

No significant differences were found in neonatal glycemia levels between the two groups.

Conclusion:

Both 5 % dextrose solution and 0.9 % physiological solution can be safely used during labor, as no significant impact on neonatal glycemia was observed. If a 5 % dextrose solution is unavailable, 0.9 % physiological solution represents a safe alternative.
