NUNEZ, Israelys et al. Prevalence of fetal tumors in the “Dr. Freddy Guevara Zuloaga” Perinatology Unit. University Hospital of Caracas. Rev Obstet Ginecol Venez [online]. 2025, vol.85, n.3, pp.391-397.  Epub 23-Oct-2025. ISSN 0048-7732.  https://doi.org/10.51288/00850311.

Objective:

To determine the prevalence of fetal tumors in the perinatology unit of the University Hospital of Caracas.

Methods:

Retrospective, descriptive and cross-sectional study. The statistical records of the unit were reviewed, in the period January 2014 - December 2024, with a population of 98 260 pregnant women evaluated, of which 3677 were pathological cases. Fifty-three patients with an ultrasound diagnosis of a fetal tumor were included.

Results:

The overall prevalence of malformations was 3.74 % (95 % CI: 3.0 % - 3.5 %) over the 11-year period. The largest number of studies was conducted in 2016 (12,781 studies), of which 542 (4.2%) were pathological cases. The highest prevalence corresponded to 2018 (5.63%). The number of fetal tumors found was 53; 1.44% of all anomalies diagnosed. The highest number of cases of fetal tumors was identified in 2014 with 9 (prevalence: 2.23%). The high prevalence of ovarian tumors (19 cases; 36.5%) is noteworthy, followed by sacrococcygeal teratoma (11 cases; 21.2%). The least frequent were dorsal tumor, cervical teratoma, scapular tumor, and lymphangioma, 1 case each (1.9%).

Conclusion:

Fetal tumors are rare entities, in general, they have an incidence between 2 and 14 per 100,000 live births. In the perinatology unit, over a period of 11 years, the prevalence of fetal tumors diagnosed through ultrasound was 0.05% of all patients evaluated.
