Human papillomavirus infection is a common sexually transmitted infection. For most people it is not a cause for concern, but infection due to a few specific viral types is common and can lead to genital warts or cancer. Most human papillomavirus infections are self-limiting and asymptomatic and usually go away without treatment. The abundant information not based on scientific evidence propagated through social networks has given rise to myths that are taken for granted, and that generate anxiety in the population. The Section of Colposcopy and Pathology of the Lower Genital Tract of the Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Venezuela decided to prepare this article with the purpose of clarifying some of the most frequent myths and answering them with truthful information obtained from reliable sources, based on the most recent medical evidence.
