Abstract

REYNA-VILLASMIL, Eduardo  and  PINA, Maira Sarmiento. Needle loss during postpartum vaginal tear suture. Rev Obstet Ginecol Venez [online]. 2026, vol.86, n.1, pp.166-170.  Epub Apr 14, 2026. ISSN 0048-7732.  https://doi.org/10.51288/00860119.

The loss of a needle during suturing postpartum vaginal tears can lead to serious complications, impacting both the physical health and psychological well-being of the patient. Although its incidence is low, the repercussions include severe hemorrhages, prolonged surgery, and increased morbidity, as well as anxiety and stress due to the concern of having a retained foreign body. We present a successful case of management of a 39-year-old patient in which a needle was lost during suturing, highlighting the relevance of plain radiography and other imaging technologies in its localization and recovery. Additionally, proper training of the surgical team in instrument count protocols protocols and effective communication are essential for addressing these situations, ensuring the safety and well-being of the patient.
