Abstract Chromosome characteristics from five Aloe species were compared. The karyological observations were carried out from root tips treated with colchicine and following traditional procedures. ANOVA, DMS mean tests and euclidean distances, based on chromosome size, length of the arms (l and s) and ratio r (l/s), showed interspecific significant differences and clustering between A. arborescens and A. succotrina, followed by A. vera and separation of A. chinensis and A. saponaria as apart group. Moreover, differences for karyotypic asymmetry, number and position of secondary constrictions were observed. Karyotype variability among species from possible chromosomal rearrangements was discussed.
