Resumen

SANCHEZ, Karelys et al. Adsorption capacity of activated carbon on total chromium from tannery waste. Rev. Téc. Ing. Univ. Zulia [online]. 2013, vol.36, n.1, pp.45-52. ISSN 0254-0770.

The overall purpose of the study was to evaluate the adsorption capacity of activated carbon on total chromium tannery waste. The adsorptive capacity of activated carbon derived from bagasse of sugarcane (CAB) and carob husks (CAA) was studied realizing tests in liquid phase with a stirring time of 60 min. Coal was obtained by a chemical activation process of the precursor with H3PO4 to 40% and a temperature of 500°C. The characterization of the adsorbent consisted of a physical-chemical analysis (bulk density; % ash and % humidity) according to ASTM standards and the specific surface area determination following the method of the iodine technique. The commercial activated carbon Norit-A (ACC) was used as a reference standard. The specific surface areas for the CAB, CAA and CAC were adsorbed I2 568,33 mg/g coal, I2 526,44 mg adsorbed/ g coal and adsorbed I2 519,46 mg/g coal, respectively. The content of total chromium in tannery effluent was analyzed, observing that the activated carbons had similar efficiencies in the removal of this metal ion.

Palabras clave : adsorption of total chromium; Activated carbon; isotherms; effluents from tanneries.
