CHAVEZ-ULLOA, Emilio; PEREZ LOPEZ, Tezozomoc; REYES TRUJEQUE, Javier y CORVO PEREZ, Francisco. Deterioration of concrete structures due to carbonation in tropical marine environment and accelerated carbonation chamber. Rev. Téc. Ing. Univ. Zulia [online]. 2013, vol.36, n.2, pp.104-113. ISSN 0254-0770.
This study is focused to analyze deterioration of simple and reinforced concrete samples elaborated using two water/cement ratio compositions, exposed to tropical marine environment and accelerated carbonation chamber. Carbonation front determination and electrochemical measurements were carried out to monitor the effect of exposure conditions on concrete deterioration. A clear influence of relative humidity is observed over the neutralization reaction of the concrete paste. The carbonation front rate is affected by water/cement ratio. Measurements of corrosion electrochemical potential, corrosion rate and concrete resistivity, show a determinant influence of relative humidity on the concrete-steel interface condition, despite carbonation have reached or not the steel rebar.
