Abstract

MILLAN, Fernando et al. Adsorption of Cu2+ and Zn2+ by variable charge lithologic materials from soils of Merida state, Venezuela. Rev. Téc. Ing. Univ. Zulia [online]. 2013, vol.36, n.3, pp.195-201. ISSN 0254-0770.

The present work focus on the preparation of adsorption beds using variable charge oxidic material from soils of Mérida state, Venezuela, after thermal treatment up to 800°C during 3 h. X Ray diffraction shows presence of iron and aluminum oxides and little or no change in de material composition after thermal treatment. Specific surfaces of calcined materials, obtained from N2 adsorption, range from 6 to 15m2 g-1 and pore volume between 70 and 140 μL g-1 Adsorption vs pH of Cu2+ and Zn2+ was studied. The former shows maximum adsorption between pH 6 - 8. Unlike Cu2+ ions, Zn2+ ions show no significative changes. Columns experiments showed differential behavior with average adsorption of about 175.31 μmol g-1 of Cu2+ ions and 334.75 μmol g-1 of Zn2+ ions. These materials could serve for residuals treatment as well as for catalyst for NOX conversion to N2.
