This paper proposes a model that explains the residential location choice of the households; in this sense the phases of the process and the most important variables that explain the decision are identified and analyzed. Based on a review of the state of the art and the household rationale, the phases of this process are identified as: the decision to look for a new location, the search for a new location and the decision on a new location. In the second part of the article, the neighborhood attributes that households evaluate when searching for a new location are identified and classified as: accessibility; built environment and urban quality; social context and neighbors characteristics; and land rent.
