This article analyzes the evolution of the concept of Environmental Education from its origins through the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, declared by the United Nations in 2002, in which the encouragement of changes in educational programs were proposed, with an emphasis on the universities’ role. The article includes a brief description and analysis of the different educational programs related with Sustainable Development worldwide, as well as the strategies recommended to guarantee a quality education for sustainability. Having served as references for the design of the Doctorate in Sustainable Development, Universidad Simón Bolívar, such programs comply with the UNESCO’s demands for the Decade.
