Sandra María Esteves began reading her poetry in public, along with other Nuyorican writers, at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, a place that served as a venue for these voices to express social demands and to affirm, in turn, the identity of the Puerto Rican diaspora. Throughout this article, we will observe that following this stage of performative poetry, the author proposes a construction and defense of the Nuyorican that goes beyond a purely nationalistic connection with the language and country of origin. This performative construction (of author and text) accommodates itself in an area of interpenetration between two worlds, where the representation of the island as paradise finds no place in a kind of writing that is intended as a necropastoril canvas or dissonant score. In this configuration, exile is conceived as a positive and generative concept, contrary to Ovid´s perspective (“exile is death”).
