Resumen
CHATEAU CANTILLANA, Pierre Francisco. Exhibition contexts: Expositions, public and critic of Gustave Courbets Works. Argos [online]. 2015, vol.32, n.63, pp.71-88. ISSN 0254-1637.
The following article studies the contexts of exhibition of the works of Gustave Courbet (1819-1877), suggesting that the often negative response to his work was provoked not only by the content of his paintings or his political position, but by the contexts of exhibition in which his work was shown. In official exhibitions, with clear language and organization, it had generally good reviews. When it was shown in private exhibitions, usually poorly organized and without any narrative reference beyond the content of the works, it turned out to be a failure, receiving negative reviews and public condemnation. We believe this shows, deeply, a problem of communication and storytelling that Courbet exhibits were unable to overcome.
