Abstract

MANRIQUE, M; MICHELON, C. A.  and  SANTOS, C. A.. REDUCCION SIMULTANEA DE Al2O3 y TiO2 EN CELDA ELECTROLITICA HALL-HEROULT. Rev. LatinAm. Met. Mat. [online]. 2002, vol.22, n.2, pp.52-56. ISSN 0255-6952.

Simultaneous reduction of Al2O3-TiO2 in a closed-type laboratory Hall-Heroult cell is studied. The initial titanium oxide dissolved in cryolite melts, current density and time of the process are analyzed. The amount of metallic titanium produced increased with increasing the amount of titanium oxide dissolved in the cryolite melt initially. The current efficiency of the cell decreases with increasing the amount of titanium oxide dissolved in the cryolite melt initially. Apparently, the preferential reoxidation of the dissolved titanium in the electrolytic bath is affecting the current efficiency of the cell. The carbon monoxide present in the gases evolving from the cell is due to the reoxidation of titanium metal
