Abstract

The process and fundamental phenomenological aspects related to synthesis of alloys and metal matrix composites in semi-solid state are reviewed: rheology, microestructural transformation and the wetting of the reinforcement material in the case of composites. Although it is not the only route, mechanical stirring is one of the most economical processing methods to produce semi-solids microstructures. For this one the main advantages are listed and the extension to metal matrix manufacture is explained.
