Abstract

Ferrite formation can be used to remove Mn2+ ions from wastewater used in mineral processing. The deal of this work is to apply the hydrochemical process to promove the manganese ferrites formation in order to reduce the contamination level in aqueous medium. The results shown that it is possible to obtain purification efficiencies greater than 98%. The optimum operation conditions were: concentration of Mn2+ of 500 mg.L-1, temperature of 60°C, time 60 minutes, air flux of 50 L.min-1, stirring rate 530 rpm and molar ratio [ Fe2+]/[Mn2+] of 15. It is proposed the reaction mechanism: xMn2+ + 3FeSO4 + 6NaOH + ½ O2 ® MnxFe3-xO4 +3Na2SO4 + 3H2O +x[Fe2+ total].  It is presented the chemical composition and stoichiometric of the manganese ferrites obtained.
