Abstract

Densification, phases and microstructural changes, hardness and toughness are evaluated in a series of WC-NbC-10%Co solids with initial NbC contents ranging between 0 - 20wt%. Specimens were manufactured using conventional powder metallurgical route techniques. Microstructural constituent phases and morphology characterization of the sintered bodies was performed by means of X ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X ray spectroscopy (EDS). The toughness has been calculated by measuring the crack length obtained in Vickers indentations. The study reveals that densification and hardness increases with NbC contents and the microstructure revealed (W,Nb)C solid solution grains of irregular morphology and heterogeneous size.
