Rev. LatinAm. Metal. Mater. [online]. 2008, vol.28, n.2, pp.91-98. ISSN 0255-6952.

The main object in the present work is to develop a procedure for the synthesis of an aluminumsilico phosphate compound that could be used as a solid electrolyte in fuel cells. During the synthesis, three different procedures were evaluated: (a) hydrothermal processing, (b) solid-state reaction and (c) humid route. Precursors used were silica, silica gel, phosphoric acid, phosphorous pentoxide, phosphate of monobasic ammonium, alumina and gibbsite. Synthesized powders were prepared as pellets in a uniaxial press and then, they were subjected to thermal treatment in oxidant atmosphere. Materials obtained were characterized by XRD, BET and SEM. Results showed presence of several phases like siliocoaluminun, aluminumsilicophosphate and silicophosphate. Incomplete reaction during solid-state sintering was detected. It was determined that hydrothermal processing was the optimum procedure to obtain an aluminumsilicophosphate compound that could be applied as fuel cell device.
