Abstract

APERADOR, Willian; VARGAS, Alejandro  and  BETANCUR-RIOS, Juan David. Evaluation of passivation of the austenitic FeMnAl alloy. Rev. LatinAm. Metal. Mater. [online]. 2012, vol.32, n.2, pp.236-243. ISSN 0255-6952.

In this paper, we assess the state of passivation for corrosion protection of three (3) samples of the Fermanal steel (FeMnAl) with nominal composition Fe-22.6Mn -6.3Al -3.1Cr -0.675C (AF1 ), Fe-28.0Mn -5.2Al -5.1Cr -2.8 Si 0.95C (AF2), Fe-30.0Mn -8.5Al -3.2Cr -1.1 Si -1.0C (AF3), in contact with an aqueous solution of NaOH to 10% w/w. AISI 316 stainless steel (AI) was used as reference material. Electrochemical evaluation was performed using anodic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Surface morphology and composition of the material exposed to corrosive attack was determined by optical microscopy (OM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicate that the electrochemical behavior of the alloy AF1 is similar to AISI 316. The OM and XRD measurements show the probable formation of oxides of manganese and aluminum compounds that could generate passivation of FeMnAl steel.
