Abstract

BRIONES, Roberto; RUAZ, Alberto; RUBIO, Carlos  and  CARREON, Hector. Microstructural and mechanical characterization of a dissimilar al6xn/316l stainless steels welded joint. Rev. LatinAm. Metal. Mater. [online]. 2014, vol.34, n.2, pp.306-315. ISSN 0255-6952.

Due to its excellent properties, the AL-6XN stainless steel has been proposed as an alternative to replace 316L stainless steel during the repair of components and pipelines used in power plants. Therefore, a deep understanding of the behavior of dissimilar welded joints is needed. In this paper, the microstructure and mechanical properties of a dissimilar joint between ALâ^’6XN and 316L stainless steels welded by the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) process are investigated using optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), tension test, analysis of X-rays dispersive energy (EDX) and microhardness measurements. An analysis of the fracture mode of the tension samples was performed. Tension test results show that welded samples exhibit higher strength, fracture occurs in the heat affected zone (HAZ) of the 316L stainless steel. Microstructural analysis shows the presence of small precipitated titanium particles in the HAZ of the 316L stainless steel.
