Abstract

SALAZAR, Sergio; PEREZ, Narciso; URBINA, Rafael  and  MEZA, Alejandra. Evaluation of potential improvements in the quality of the venezuelan delayed coke through management of the conditions of design and operation of the drum of coking. Rev. LatinAm. Metal. Mater. [online]. 2015, vol.35, n.2, pp.326-333. ISSN 0255-6952.

An experimental setup was developed at laboratory scale to reproduce the performance and quality of products of the Delayed Coking process, using intermediates products from Venezuelan refineries. The assembly developed allowed to collect all the liquid and solid products generated. The experimental design allowed us to evaluate the effect of the conditions of design and operation involved, such as drum temperature, reaction time, ramps of heating inside the furnace and orientation of the reactor. The results of characterization of the products composition of metals, optical texture, MBE (solid), indicate that all design and operating conditions studied have an impact on the characteristics and composition of the final product and that a detailed study of the relations between the conditions and the properties of the products would propose reaction mechanisms and better conditions of operation to get liquid products of commercial quality and coke with morphological properties appropriate for a future use alternate to the fuel. This work recommends continuing the studies with other cuts of refinery with SARA properties different to the employee, in order to find correlations between each of these groups with the quality of the coke and specific experimental conditions and run the study in the plant designed at scale pilot to evaluate their effects over studied conditions during the scaling.

Keywords : Delayed coking; coke; operational conditions; coke; mesophase; laboratory scale.
