Resumen

CLERC P, Karen et al. Secuestro Óseo en el Metatarso Derecho de un Toro Raza Carora. Revista de la Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias [online]. 2005, vol.46, n.1, pp.27-32. ISSN 0258-6576.

The metatarsus fractures are the most common accidents in bovines of any age. Nevertheless, when a trauma occurs at this level, the bone not always fractures totally, but that takes place an incomplete fracture that leaves a comminute that can become a sequestrum. In the described case, the animal underwent a traumatism with opened wound, that caused the partial fracture of the diaphysis of metatarsus of the pelvic limb at its medial face. After 50 days of evolution, and not yielding the claudication, the bull was sent to the Hospital Dr. Daniel Cabello of the School of Veterinary Medicine of the Universidad Central de Venezuela, for its evaluation. The affected zone displayed a wound healed with seropurulent drainage and hardened size increase. To the palpation crackle  was not detected but revealed the presence of acute pain. A radiological study was performed that showed the presence of an osseous sequestrum in the proximal diaphysis of metatarsus and an ossification process around the fractured zone with also radiographic evidence of osteomyelitis. The patient was put under surgery for the removal of the sequestrum, debridle of the osseous callus of fibrous tissues and cleaning the surface of metatarsus. The evolution was satisfactory and the animal soon recovered its condition in 45 days after the surgical process. The extracted sequestrum was 6cm x 3cm x 3mm of thickness, that is why it was considered that only the cortex of the  metacarpus was affected. The animal returned to service by natural breeding  60 days after surgery and it did not accused any type of pain nor claudication during the conducted services. In this patient the osteomyelitis process yielded to the application of post surgical antibiotics with Florfenicol and Enrofloxacina, the surgical wound healed by second intention with local treatment and the recovery of the bone was total.
